DataForSEO vs Ahrefs / Semrush / Moz

Choosing a programmatic SEO data source: data sourcing, pricing model, index depth, and build-vs-buy. Sits under DataForSEO BrainDecisions.

Overview

Evaluated strictly as APIs you build on (not dashboards), the four vendors split along one structural axis: DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go per request/result with no seats; ent-ahrefs, ent-semrush, and ent-moz gate API access behind a paid subscription seat plus credits/units/rows. That single difference drives most of the choice for engineering-led teams.

Pricing model (the key differentiator)

ProviderAPI entryUnit modelPer-1k Google SERPs
DataForSEOPAYG, $50 min deposit, no seatsper-request/per-result2.00 (Live)
AhrefsAPI v3, ~10,000/mo + subscription50 units/request + per-rown/a (link-led)
SemrushBusiness plan $499.95/mo + units~10 units/line live, ~50 historicaln/a (keyword-led)
MozBundled with Moz Pro (299/mo)rows (1 row = 1 data point)n/a

At ~1M SERP requests/month DataForSEO runs ~0.60/1,000 SERPs is the structural cost advantage.

Data sourcing & index depth

  • DataForSEO: own SERP scraper, own backlink crawler (“the web each second nonstop”), Google + Bing Ads keyword feeds, clickstream. Index ~1.96T live backlinks, ~8.08B Google keywords, ~544M stored SERPs.
  • Ahrefs: AhrefsBot (~6B pages/day), 35T live backlinks, ~28.7B keywords - the deepest link index.
  • Semrush: own crawler (~10B pages/day), 43T+ backlinks, ~27.9B keywords, 142+ geo DBs.
  • Moz: Link Explorer (~40-45T processed / ~4.7T active URLs), DA/PA model. See cap-data-collection-methodology for how DataForSEO sources each.

Decision rules (buyer fit)

  • SaaS builder / product engineer → DataForSEO: lowest cost-per-request at scale, PAYG, broadest raw endpoints, 2,000 req/min.
  • Agency with backlink-led deliverables → Ahrefs: largest/most-trusted link index, strong analyst UI.
  • Marketing team needing all-in-one → Semrush: SEO+PPC+social, white-label, many geo DBs.
  • Budget link metrics / DA scoring → Moz: brand familiarity, cheaper entry.

When DataForSEO wins / loses

  • Wins: cost at scale and no “UI tax,” breadth of raw data + headroom, strong AI-SERP support (AI Overview/AI Mode), live data quality “matches the incumbents” once integrated.
  • Loses: no native dashboard (raw JSON), default search-volume granularity mirrors Keyword Planner averages, cost-control footguns (accidental Live ~3.3x Standard), and a smaller backlink/keyword index than Ahrefs/Semrush.

How it fits

Gotchas / limits

  • Index figures and API price floors vary by source; competitor API floors (e.g. Ahrefs “$500/mo”) are secondary-aggregator estimates - treat as approximate.
  • Tool-to-tool search-volume discrepancies run 30%-200%; no provider is “correct” in absolute terms.
  • A separate real-time-scraping rival (SerpApi) competes only on live SERP with legal cover, but at ~15-40x DataForSEO’s per-SERP cost.

One-line verdict

  • Builders optimizing data-acquisition cost default to DataForSEO; teams buying finished metrics, link depth, or a UI default to the incumbents.
