DataForSEO (the vendor)

The API-first SEO data provider behind this brain: raw structured SEO data over a v3 REST API, pay-as-you-go, no dashboard. Sits under DataForSEO BrainEntities.

Overview

DataForSEO is a programmatic data provider, not a dashboard SaaS. It runs its own SERP scraper infrastructure, its own backlink crawler, and pulls keyword volume from the Google Ads and Bing Ads APIs, augmented with clickstream panels. The product is delivered as structured JSON over a single v3 API surface (cap-platform-architecture), priced per request or per result with no per-seat subscription. The positioning is explicit: it “scrapes only publicly available information from SERPs” and supplies it in structured form for engineering-led teams and SaaS products that embed SEO data into their own UIs.

What it covers

Reported scale (live “Our Data” counters, 2026-06-26)

  • Google keyword database: ~8.08 billion keywords; Bing: ~4.35 billion keywords.
  • Backlinks index: ~1.96 trillion live backlinks across ~197.8 billion live pages and ~681.7 million backlink domains.
  • SERP index: ~544 million stored Google SERPs.
  • Note a flagged discrepancy: vendor blog/database pages cite ~2.02 trillion live backlinks / 289.5M domains; the live counter is the more current figure.

Pricing philosophy

  • Pure pay-as-you-go: deposit and pay per request/result, no seats. 1 free credit at signup usable for an unlimited period.
  • Cheapest-at-scale positioning: Standard-Normal Google SERP at 600 per 1M SERPs); Live at 2,000 per 1M).
  • 2,000 requests/minute rate limit (cap-rate-limits-throughput), materially higher than incumbents.
  • See cap-queue-priority-cost-model for the per-result vs per-request billing model and the cost field.

Trust / adoption

  • Positioned as an API-first data layer trusted by 750+ SEO software companies/agencies and, per marketing, 10,000+ companies (agencies, SaaS platforms, AI teams).
  • Homepage displays enterprise logos (Samsung, Amazon, Adobe, HubSpot, Oracle), though formal partner vs customer status is not specified. Treat the 750+ vs 10,000+ figures as different marketing snapshots.

When to use / how it fits

Gotchas / limits

  • No native dashboard: returns raw JSON, requiring engineering or a no-code layer (n8n, Sheets, Looker) to be usable.
  • Default plain search volume mirrors Google Keyword Planner averages unless you opt into the clickstream-refined endpoint (use_clickstream).
  • Cost-control footguns: accidental Live-queue usage costs ~3.3x the Standard batch rate; the learning curve is real (dec-cost-control-strategy).
  • Backlink/keyword index is smaller than ent-ahrefs (~35T) and ent-semrush (~43T); link-depth-critical agencies still favor Ahrefs.
  • Not a fit for tiny volume, non-technical teams, or per-user latency budgets (dec-when-not-to-use-dataforseo).

Quick facts

  • 1 free credit at signup, no per-seat fee.
  • 2,000 requests/minute; Standard task results retained 30 days, re-collectable at no extra charge.
  • 12 API modules under one v3 envelope, from SERP and Keywords Data to Backlinks, OnPage, and AI Optimization.
  • Delivered as structured JSON; usable in production via the official Python client, the MCP server, or no-code nodes (n8n/Make/Zapier).
